Dementia Friendly Virginia Water

Background

We are a group of local organisations who have come together with the goal of making Virginia Water a nicer place to live for people living with Dementia, including those who care and support.

Aims

The local DAA aims to support the development of Dementia Friendly Communities to reduce isolation, anxiety and exclusion, and improve the quality of life for those with dementia and their families living in Virginia Water.

This project will empower people to share information and training to increase the level of awareness and understanding of dementia and mental health within the local community. The increased level of awareness is aimed at driving away stigma and modeling a community which can effectively support itself and its older residents to remain a part of the community for as long as they chose to.

Its focus is on  strengthening community partnerships, working with local agencies and businesses to build a dementia friendly community.

We aim to get a Champion from each organization trained to deliver basic awareness session "Dementia Friends" and take this back to their organization and wider community.

Objectives

  • Support the increase in diagnosis by raising awareness and thereby reducing the incidence of crisis
  • Encourage Dementia Champions
  • Share good practice
  • Be part of the scheme of recognition for business and organisations to recognize their contribution to Dementia Friendly Communities
  • Provide a safe environment to go to to help reduce the feelings of isolation and anxiety, and to network with people in a similar situation.
