1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Musica provides person centered music workshops in care settings, delivering sessions that are tailored to suit the needs of the group, particularly for participants living with dementia. We ensure that people living with dementia feel supported in our groups and that their carers are invited to take an active part in the sessions.

We have a team of Area Managers who deliver Musica workshops across the country, enabling people with dementia and their carers to take part in activities they may not have experienced before. All of our Area Managers have received dementia awareness training and are either Dementia Friends or Dementia Champions.

We work closely with care staff to understand more about the participant’s needs and to ensure that their responses to the music (memories associated, preferences etc) are communicated back to the staff to enhance the person centered care.

We are an active member of a variety of arts and health/care sector networks and through this we aim to share our experiences of delivering arts activities for people living with dementia, and to highlight our commitment to the National Dementia Declaration.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

It can be difficult for care settings to fund the sessions; there needs to be more funds available for the provision of activities as there is a growing body of research that shows the benefits of participating in activities such as this for people living with dementia.

It can often be difficult for people living with dementia to access services in their area. There needs to be a system whereby community health teams can signpost people with dementia to activities in their area which may be beneficial.
