1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

By our organisation being informed and aware of the issues that dementia can pose, and making sure that all of our staff, user groups and volunteers will have the necessary knowledge and levels of understanding.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

One major challenge will be changing people’s perception of what dementia actually is and its negative connotations.

We can  change that perception via our sessions here, so that, if you have dementia, it does not mean that you cannot lead a full and active life.

2. Actions

  • Inaugural Dementia Training for group leaders

We have already held an inaugural Dementia Friends session for some of our group leaders here at the Centre.

This was certainly beneficial and will allow those who attended to talk amongst their friends and groups and make them better informed.

Each person also committed to make a personal action on the day.

  • Dementia Champion Training

We now have a member of staff who has become a Dementia Friends Champion and another who intends to attend training in due course.

This will allow us to organise and hold Dementia Friends sessions amongst our own groups and also partner organisations.

  • Dementia Friends session / Activity at dementia cafe

Having received Dementia Champion training, we now have the ability to provide Dementia Friends sessions to each of our activity groups based at our centre, which we aim to do over the course of the year.

We also intend to provide an activity session at one of the local Dementia Cafes.  This could either be line dancing or a music & reminiscence session.
