Marks and Spencer, Worcester

The Alzheimer's Society is our store charity of the year and we have already had links with the local Dementia Action Alliance groups by holding 2 Dementia Friends awareness sessions in store. Our customers are at the heart of our business and we want to continue to give great customer service by raising awareness of dementia in the community.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We pride ourselves on our customer service and want our staff to be more aware of dementia in order to understand how we can help them to have a wonderful experience when shopping in our store.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We have already started further training of our store teams by holding two dementia awreness courses in store. We plan to do more of these over the next few months.

2. Actions

  • Staff Awareness

We want to raise awareness of dementia with as many store staff as possible to give them a greater understanding of  how we can enhance our customers shopping experience. We have already held 2 Dementia Friends awareness sessions with staff with approx 40 people in attendance, and we plan to hold a few more over the next few months.

  • Involving people affected by dementia

Our Store Manager visited a local Dementia Cafe to find out about the experiences of people living with dementia when visiting the store. As a result of their feedback, a group from the cafe were invited to come to the store and walk around with the Store Manager, and make recommendations on improvements. As a result of this we have made some adaptations to make the shopping experience easier and more enjoyable for people affected by dementia.
