1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The Special Care Dental Service would like to show support and commitment to the national strategy to improve the lives of people living with Dementia.

We will:

  • Set up a working group set up to work on actions as detailed above.
  • Ensure Dementia awareness is  part of the remit and standard agenda item in Dental Nurse Special Care Group
  • Share progress/ development of actions to be shared with all staff at quarterly staff meeting or detailed in regular staff newsletter
  • Continue to develop good networking links with community based organisations supporting people living with Dementia

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Action 2 Numbers receiving the leaflet during the pilot period may be low, and the evaluation may be based on the response of a small number of people.

Action 3 & Action 5

Capacity may be an issue due to the availability of the Oral Health promoter due to annual leave, sickness etc. To overcome this we are looking to  develop the Dental Nurse role to incorporate these activities.

Action 4

It may be difficult to make environmental changes as we hold no responsibility for the budget for this. We will write to the Head of Estates and of NHS Properties to  share the results of the Environmental audit and raise their awareness of the recommendations of the National Dementia Declaration.
