1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

As an organisation we can ensure that all staff are aware of the needs of people with dementia so that they can deliver a service which is effective for people with dementia.

We can ensure that the environment is welcoming, provides space for a person with dementia to take the time necessary to be relaxed, find the products they needs and pay for them  without feeling confused or hurried.

We can provide a chair for customers to sit on, so that a person with dementia can feel able to stay for a chat. or a carer to receive some friendly support, if needed.

We can provide space for DAA leaflets so that we can become an information hub for people to know about dementia, services available to people and the work of the Hadleigh DAA and staff can signpost people to these.


2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The shop is small.  There is usually only one member of staff working at a time which might mean they are not always available to give the necessary support as required.

The size of the shop also means that it sometimes becomes unavoidably cluttered which could cause a person with dementia to feel confused.


2. Actions

  • Ensure that all staff are dementia aware

    Give all staff a copy of ‘How to help people with dementia.  A guide for customer staff’ and tell them to read it and review their dealings with clients and the premises in light of the information.

    Give staff details of training available to become a dementia friend and the time to take the training.

  • Ensure the premises are dementia friendly.

    Review our premises in the light of our knowledge of the needs of people with dementia, and make appropriate changes where needed.  Ensure our signage is always clearly printed and not handwritten.

    Ensure that our customer chair is always free of items which would deter a person from sitting and chatting.

  • Provide information to the public regarding the work of HDAA and the needs of people with dementia.

    Make space available to display leaflets provided by HDAA, and actively signpost 

    customers to these when appropriate.  Ensure that we always have a supply of leaflets.
