1. Action Plan
1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?
Home Instead Senor Care specialises in providing quality home care for the elderly in their own homes. It is the only home care provider in the UK with City & Guilds accreditation for Dementia in the UK. Clients supported by Home Instead receive a minimum of 1 hour visits with continuity of care. Home Instead carefully matches every client with CAREGivers around their interests, hobbies and life experiences and develop care plans for those living with dementia so that they can continue to do the things they have always enjoyed and remain living independently in their own homes.
Action 1: Create More Dementia Friends
As Dementia Champions we will promote Dementia Awareness and create more dementia friends. Mark & Vanessa McGlade, the owners and directors of Home Instead Senior Care – Exeter & East Devon are both Dementia Champions and actively raise awareness of dementia in the local community. Mark & Vanessa have created over 500 Dementia Friends in the Exeter & East Devon area.
Action 2: Provide dedicated dementia training to our staff
Home Instead Senior Care – Exeter & East Devon has accreditation from City & Guilds in Dementia Training and trains all of its staff in how to provide the best dementia care for people living in their own homes. Home Instead Senior Care is committed to providing the best quality Dementia Care available to allow those living with dementia to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Companionship is at the heart of the Home Instead ethos of care, allowing the person living with dementia to remain active and engaged in their local communities.
Action 3: Deliver Family & Friends Dementia Workshops in the Community to help those supporting people living with dementia
Home Instead Senior Care is committed to sharing best practice in dementia care and to providing free dementia workshops to the family and friends of those living with dementia in the Exeter & East Devon area. These workshops help families understand the different types of dementia, how they can affect people, the proven techniques to manage behaviours, case studies, how to capture the important things in a person’s life and use that information to engage and deliver the best outcomes.
Home Instead Senior Care also delivers Free Dementia Workshops to businesses, GP Surgeries, Dental Surgeries, High Street Shops, Churches, health care professionals and local authorities
2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?
Everyone living with dementia is an individual and so by understanding their likes, dislikes and life experiences we develop personalised care plans for every client. Careful matching of client with CAREGiver delivers much better outcomes. One of the biggest challenges for us as a care provider is in supporting the families and friends of those living with dementia to understand the disease and how best to support their loved ones to live well at home.
