1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We can ensure the environment is more dementia-friendly as well as being more kind and compassionate to people living with dementia as well as their carers. Furthermore we can organise training sessions and provide further information for staff to improve the quality of care for dementia patients and provide as much support possible.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

  • Lack of resources to provide to patients which would improve their level of understanding
  • Time constraints for staff training
  • Lack of understanding of dementia
  • A busy pharmacy environment

2. Actions

  • Improve staff awareness and understanding

Ensuring all staff have a basic understanding of dementia by undertaking a Dementia Friends session either via a session within the pharmacy or online. Working with other organisations such as Alzheimer's Society to know where to signpost those with dementia and their carers to relevant organisations and services

    Status:
  • Making pharmacy environment more dementia-friendly

We will take steps to ensure the environment is as dementia-friendly as possible by referring to Alzheimer's Society resources and earmarking a quiet space for patients to take time out if they need to.

    Status:
  • Raising awareness in the community

We will supply literature and display posters about dementia within the pharmacy for customers. We also intend to hold a dementia awareness event in the pharmacy.

  • Patient support - optimising medicines

In the pharmacy we use many compliance aids to help patients manage their own medication, for example pill boxes and dispensers. We can ensure people with dementia and their carers have information on these.
