Home Instead Senior Care supports clients to remain independent, in the comfort of their own homes. We focus heavily on individuality, ensuring that everyone’s specific goals and outcomes are met, whatever they may be. We ensure a compassionate, respectful and dignified approach, giving families and friends confidence that their loved ones are being looked after. Building relationships with both our clients and the people that surround them is key for us in making sure that our care is of the highest quality; our minimum of 1 hour visits ensure the best understanding. Our recruitment process is focused on recruiting CAREGivers who genuinely care, and we provide them with ongoing training (including for Alzheimer’s and other dementias) giving them the confidence to be happy and extremely competent in their roles.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our role in delivering better outcomes for those living with dementia is significant. We work with our clients right from the start to make sure we are being flexible and creative in our approach in helping clients to achieve their individual goals. This also extends to our interaction with the families and friends of our clients to help them in their journeys in supporting their loved one.

Our matching process with our clients and CAREGivers ensures the best possible attention to our clients’ needs, whilst seeing the same team of CAREGivers on a regular basis and a guaranteed personal introduction at the start of the service provides comfort and familiarity for our clients. We continually monitor satisfaction through regular quality assurance visits, and respond quickly and effectively to issues and changes to client needs.

As part of our Home Instead training, both director and care manager are dementia friends champions, and have pledged to provide dementia friends sessions to all CAREGivers that join us. We are also introducing a City & Guilds accredited dementia training programme, which focuses on the individual and their personal dementia journey. This training programme is used by Skills for Care as an example of best practice for dementia training. 

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We need to focus on changing the way people perceive dementia; particularly the need to look at clients’ lives and personal experiences, and not just the person that stands before them.  We look at the need to treat the person who has dementia with respect and dignity at all times no matter what their behaviour. Awareness and understanding of dementia is not just about educating our CAREGivers, but also spreads to the general public and local businesses and retailers.

Also, whilst the general perception is that people with dementia should consider residential care, we need to increase awareness and understanding regarding the benefits of how home care can be tailored to the needs of someone living with dementia. 

2. Actions

  • Develop local contacts and information resources

    Develop understanding of, and contact with, local support groups and organisations (including other DAA members) that provide resources to people with dementia, their carers, friends and family and develop links with key contacts. Signposting is a clear responsibility of ours to ensure people get access to the services they need to get the most out of life.

  • Make more dementia friends

    Run regular dementia friends sessions for CAREGivers as part of their initial training. Also organise more local dementia friends sessions in the local community.

  • Enlist more CAREGivers to the City & Guilds Alzheimer's and other dementias training

    Staff will be encouraged to receive further training on dementia, through a City & Guilds accredited programme. This is designed to further their develop skills and knowledge in supporting people with dementia.
