1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We are committed to hearing from people who use health and care services about what they think is working well or could be improved. It is vital that we give people with dementia a voice since they are more likely to be users of health and care services than the general population. For example, we know that 70% of people in care homes have dementia or severe memory problems. We want to continually review our practice to ensure that we work in ways that encourages people with dementia to share their experiences so that we can feed back to providers and commissioners what is working well and what could be improved, with the ultimate aim of improving local services.

We also want people with dementia and their carers to be able to access our signposting and advice service, so that we can give them information which will help them make informed choices about using health and care services.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

  • Finding the ways to communicate appropriately to people with severe dementia maybe a challenge. We will make sure we work with service providers to think of the best ways to carry out engagement work, and where possible will pilot surveys with people with dementia. We will try to keep surveys short and in clear simple language. We will use pictures where possible.
  • When people contact our advice line, we will ask them their preferred method of communication and if they would like us to follow up any phone conversations with information in writing.

2. Actions

  • Raise awareness in work place

    All staff (and 15 volunteers so far) have recieved dementia friends training.  Two staff are Dementia Champions and have provided the training.

  • Find a champion in the team

    Two staff members are dementia champions and are able to deliver training in house to volunteers for projects where they may come into contact with people with dementia.

  • Raise awareness of people’s needs

    Where we do engagement work with people with dementia, staff and volunteers will wear clearly visible large type name badges. We will also endeavour to make sure any surveys or engagement work with this group is done in a way that is easy to understand.
