1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We have a good understanding of dementia and how we can support clients with capacity issues in making their experience with us accessible and easier. We will support the South Gloucestershire Dementia Action Alliance by becoming a dementia friendly firm by training all of our members of staff.

We pride ourselves in being specialists lawyers on your side. Our elder care department specialises in capacity issues and are always raising awareness of the impact of dementia on the person, and how we can assist a client when there has been a diagnosis of a degenerative condition such as dementia.

We aim to support clients with capacity issues, so that they can access our legal services easier and be able to make well informed decisions.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We will endeavor to review our effectiveness through inviting feedback from clients, reviewing our training and working policies around the issues relating to dementia, so that we can support clients and members of staff more effectively.

2. Actions

  • Become a dementia friendly firm

We have run three Dementia Friends Sessions at our Fishponds, Bedminster and Kingswood  offices - over 70% of our staff are now Dementia Friends. Our trainee solicitor, Lisa Morgan, is a Dementia Champion having attended the training by the Alzheimer's Society.

As part of Dementia Action Week 2018, Lisa co-delivered three information sessions to the public and joined the Bath Dementia Action Alliance on Friday 25th May to assist with hosting a dementia information stall in Bath centre, as part of their campaign to raise awareness.  Lisa will also implement the "Dementia Friends" information session in house as part of our induction training to new members of staff.

As part of becoming a dementia friendly  firm, we are also reviewing our processes and procedures including text reminders for appointments, and clear signage in all offices.
