Kirklees Active Leisure

Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) is the charitable trust which manages 13 leisure facilities and swimming pools on behalf of Kirklees Council. We are managed by a Board of Trustees who come from a range of backgrounds and bring a mix of skills to the strategic direction of the Trust. KAL’s vision is to help more people, become more active, more often. To do this we aim to provide high quality services and facilities to all our customers as outlined in our customer charter. We are dedicated to increasing the number of people taking part in sport, active recreation and wider physical activity through responding to the needs of the local community and providing a dynamic and excellent value for money service.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

One of our main focus’ from now on is to work towards making KAL as accessible as possible for people living with dementia and their carer’s; starting with but not limited to developing staff and customer awareness, facility and environment and the products and services we offer.
As KAL oversee the management of 13 leisure facilities across Kirklees, each one providing a service for communities that have very different needs. Using insight from Kirklees Council and the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) we have found that we – as community providers – need to develop to support our communities better to ensure we are continually working towards achieving our vision of helping more people, become more active, more often.

  • KAL aims to have a training plan in place to ensure all staff receives Dementia Friends Awareness Sessions as part of their corporate induction.
  • KAL plan to work closely with Kirklees Council, Age UK and the ASA to review facility and environment access with the support of KDAA and the environmental checklist.
  • KAL recognise the need for consultations with people living with dementia and their carer’s/care providers to ensure that KAL are meeting the needs of the target populations within the local communities. 

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

KAL have a high staff turnover and a predominantly young workforce, this could affect the roll out of the training plan and the relatability of young staff to people living with dementia.
As KAL are a charitable trust any profit we make is put straight back into the organisation to make sure we are continually evolving to meet the community needs, this in itself means we may not have the funds to secure vast facility developments in the short term but that redevelopments will need to be projected to future projects.
KAL have numerous developments in the field of dementia to target different business areas and as such it could potentially become very full-on. The Project lead aims to have a strategic plan to oversee all project areas and ensure attention is distributed evenly in order for them to be successful.

2. Actions

  • To increase staff awareness of Dementia

    KAL employ over 600 staff members and currently only 108 of those have attended dementia Friends awareness session. We already have 1 Dementia Champion within KAL dedicated to delivery of the sessions; however we would seek to increase the number of Dementia Friends and source a further champion from the sessions to reach a larger scope of staff.
    We aim to offer North Kirklees, South Kirklees and Central Kirklees awareness sessions and to further our partnership work by offering the session out to other organisations.
    With us working to have an increased number of KAL staffs having completed the dementia friends awareness session, we are developing a workforce that welcomes and offers basic understanding and compassion to customers whose lives are touched with dementia.

  • To create a strategic dementia project document to organise and monitor progress of KAL’s dementia developments. itled

    Although KAL are looking to create a KDAA Action plan addressing 2 actions at a time; due to the size of our organisation we have numerous dementia related tasks that involve various business areas and as such we need to create a strategic document that will enable us to monitor all project areas to ensure projects keep to time and all project areas are being developed. To aid us in creating such a document, we have implemented a steering group to share best practices and enable KAL to be at the forefront of dementia related partnerships that will benefit the Kirklees communities. Members of the group include KDAA representatives, Age UK Chief Executive, KAL Trustees and Kirklees Council leads. We are also looking at inviting individuals who are living with or whose lives are affected by dementia so we are able to hear first-hand how the developments we make are benefiting the user groups and so we can identify further barriers to participation that we may not have initially considered.
