We primarily work with Local Authorities to deliver the right kinds of health and physical activity outcomes that make a difference to the lives of people and their communities; it’s about more than operating facilities. Local Leisure facility offering; gym, swim and group exercise classes. The High Peak contract in Derbyshire consists of Buxton, New Mills and Glossop Leisure Centres.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

-We will offer free memberships to carers of people living with dementia

- The Buxton swimming and Fitness Centre to become a member of Buxton and High Peak Dementia Action Alliance to share best practice with other members.

-Appropriate staff members will attend a Dementia Friends Champion induction to enable consistent dementia friends sessions in the organisation to front line staff.

-We will utilise the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) material, such as the environmental tool to assess how dementia friendly the building is and aim to improve on these improvements, if identified.


2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The challenges to delivering these outcomes may include;

Funding any significant results that are identified during the environmental assessment tool, should these not be dementia friendly.

To ensure all staff members receive dementia friends awareness sessions in line with working patterns and number of dementia friends champions appointed.

2. Actions

  • Increase awareness and understanding of dementia to members of staff

    -Become active member of Buxton and High Peak Dementia Action Alliance

    -Ensure staff, especially frontline staff, have received a Dementia Friends Awareness session to be able to recognise and support people living with dementia

    -To recruit one or two in house staff the Dementia Friends Champions to deliver Dementia Friends to staff and members of the community

  • Working to become a Dementia Friendly leisure centre

    -Ensure where possible, that the premises are dementia friendly by providing a quiet area near the reception area.

    -Utilising the ASA Environmental Assessment Tool to identify if signage is appropriate signage and decor is dementia friendly. 

    -A member of management to attend ASA training `Understanding Dementia in the leisure environment`.

  • To offer Dementia Friendly Swimming-Buxton LC to pilot initially before rolling out across High Peak LC's

    -To work alongside Alzheimers Society and the ASA to deliver weekly dementia friendly pool sessions

    -To recruit a suitable instructor to lead dementia friendly swim sessions and promote within community

    -To identify appropriate pool time alongside other swimming groups/activities
