Real Food Ilkley CIC

Real Food Ilkley (RFI) organises a monthly fine food and local produce market in central Ilkley with a strong community focus. RFI promotes local economic growth by supporting local producers and sellers to showcase local and specialist food to residents and visitors to Ilkley. Customers benefit from a more personal and educational shopping experience. RFI facilitates networking of local artisan producers with local food and drink retailers reducing food miles. The market acts as a “community hub” with entertainment and two stalls at every market are reserved for local not for profit groups to allow them to raise funds, recruit volunteers, promotion etc.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The Fine Food & Local Produce Market is always held on the first Sunday of the month 10am – 3pm (except January). We have produced posters and postcards with all the dates for 2017. People with dementia and families/carers could have copies to display at home/in diaries and visit the market as a regular monthly outing. The market has a fixed base and is located in central IIkley so is easy to find. There is a car park adjacent to the site and several cafes and public toilets in close proximity. RFI volunteers wearing Hi-Vis Jackets are always available to provide information and liaise with stallholders. The market offers a more personal, relaxed and friendly shopping experience that may suit people with dementia and families/carers.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The market site is ideally located in central Ilkley but does provide some challenges related to this. The site is small and near a busy road. RFI is a CIC with no paid staff so relies entirely on volunteers. There is a guest stall at most markets so the stallholder will not be as familiar as regulars with customer base. We need to increase the number of volunteers we currently have in order to ensure there are sufficient numbers at every market.

2. Actions

  • Improve our understanding of dementia

Bernie Baldwin, Director RFI, will take lead and invite and encourage all volunteers and stallholders to attend awareness sessions on dementia. We are currently liaising with Alison Eagle, Lead Volunteer, Dementia Friendly Ilkley re holding a group session for RFI in May/June 2017.

Most of our volunteers and several stallholders attended a Demetia Friends session in Ilkley on 13 June 2017. Feedback was that the session was extremely useful. Details of future sessions in Ilkley or surrounding areas were given to those who were unable to make this session. We will encourage new volunteers and stallholders to attend sessions as and when available.

  • Raise dementia awareness at RFI markets

Provide a community stall free of charge to Dementia Friendly Ilkley at the RFI market on Sunday 7 May 2017 (confirmed)DFI took a stall at a market in 2016 and found this to be extremely useful. Bernie Baldwin will take opportunity to walk round market with one of DFI volunteers to get advice about how it could be improved in terms of supporting people with dementia and their families/carers.

DFI was allocated a stall at the market at May markets in 2017 and 2018 and feedback on both occasions was that  it had been a good opportunity to engage with customers and raise awareness of DFI.

Display posters, leaflets etc on RFI Information Point at every market. Encourage RFI volunteers and stallholders who have undergone training to wear Dementia Friends badges. Publicise that RFI is working towards becoming a Dementia Friendly organisation by submitting articles and photographs to local press, on social media etc.

RFI Information Stall is focal point of monthly market and DFI information has been provided. Several RFI volunteers who have had Dementia Friends training wear badges at every market - others will be encouraged to do so.

  • Ensure safety at RFI markets

continue to work closely with Ilkley Parish Council and Bradford Council re road closures on market days, ensure enough safety cones used, stalls are kept tidy etc. Stallholders are given strict guidelines re safety for all the public but we will make them aware of additional needs of people with dementia.

Additional equipment such as Road Closed signs, cones, weights etc has been purchased to increase level of safety for all at the monthly markets. RFI volunteers do a safety check on every stall to ensure sharps are stored correctly, stalls are kept tidy and free from clutter, correct size weights are used to secure gazebos. Volunteers have been briefed re safety issues and a volunteer is now on duty at both ends of closed road. A large Information (i) flag has been purchased for RFI Information Stall to clearly show where information/help is available.
