1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

As a company, we are currently in the process of enrolling all staff onto Dementia Awareness certificate (Level 2) to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the condition.

We have publications such as 'Living with early stage dementia' that we can give to service users and their families.

We encourage life story books to be created and find these particularly helpful when working with individuals as their condition deteriorates.

We advocate on behalf of the individual, even if it is with family members.

We have a few members of staff who are dementia friends, we are working on encouraging more staff to take on this role

We encourage our service users to take an active part in their care within the limits of their abilities

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The biggest challenge that we face, is with family members, who instruct us against the service users wishes. For example, instructing us what they should eat at mealtimes when the service user still has ability to make a choice for themselves.

Some families seem to think that if their loved one has dementia, that they are unable to make even simple choices, unfortunately this has on ocassion resulted in us having raise a safeguarding alert.

2. Actions

  • All staff to undertake Level 2 cert in Dementia Awareness

    We have a training matrix to roll out this qualification to all staff. The qualification takes approx 8 weeks to achieve.

    This qualification will give staff a greater insight into Dementia including understanding and how to react to behaviours.

  • All staff to become Dementia friends as a minimum

    As an organisation, we have joined Dementia friends.

    We intend to enroll all our staff as a dementia friend as a minimum and are then looking at a 25% minimum of staff to become Dementia champions

    Having spoken previously with staff, we feel that despite Dementia being such a prevalent condition, that knowledge within the community is still very stereo typical and at times, not at all friendly or knowledgeable

  • Viability of opening a day care resource for individuals with dementia

    We are very aware that there seems to be a shortage of day care amenieties, especially for individuals with dementia.

    We are investigating the cost/feasability of opening a centre specifically for individuals with dementia that is environmentaly appropriate and has a wealth of activities aimed at the individuals

    It would also give carers the peace of mind that their loved one has been appropriately placed with staff that understand the condition and can support them.
