Dementia Friendly Southampton (Southampton DAA)

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We have consulted with professionals on how our physical environment can become more dementia friendly and we are looking at implementing changes where possible.

We will also conduct a walk-round of our environment with people with dementia and their carers to hear how they think we could be more dementia friendly.

As dementia can affect people in many different ways we are striving to support anyone that is affected by the condition in any way we can.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Westquay shopping centre is a busy hub and so can be quite noisy and confusing. We will work to make improvements in any way we can.

2. Actions

  • Improve staff awareness and understanding of dementia

We will select a member of staff to become a Dementia Champion and deliver Dementia Friends sessions to our staff. We will include Dementia Friend sessions in our induction process.

  • Review our store’s physical environment

We will consult with people with dementia and professionals to look at how we can make our environment more dementia friendly.

  • Support our local community to become more dementia friendly

We will help Southampton become a dementia friendly city by carrying out the actions in our action plan, encouraging stores to sign up to Southampton Dementia Action Alliance and working with the Dementia Friendly Southampton project to run an event during Dementia Awareness Week.
