As a chiropractic clinic we offer diagnosis, treatment and management of a wide range of musculoskeletal problems to people of all ages. We treat all kinds of muscle, joint, nerve and ligament problems. Most often patients consult us with pain affecting one or more areas whether it is spiral or a joint such as hip, knee or shoulder. we also see people who are athletes or sports people who want support achieving a personal goal or to achieve a level of fitness for a competition or event.As chiropractors we can offer many types of treatment including manipulation, mobilisation, acupuncture, soft tissue work, trigger point therapy to name a few. We place a firm emphasis on patient centred care and believe in empowering patients to take control of their problem and overall health.

1. Action Plan
1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?
As a chiropractic clinic we see a wide range of people. We treat patients of all ages and often have the privilege of treating people over many years at regular but infrequent intervals. This allows us to develop a good relationship with patients and often their families too. Occasionally it is possible to detect a change in behaviour of the patient themselves or pick up on something a patient reports about their family member. If there is a suspicion that issues with memory or understanding are developing it is gently suggested a consultation with a GP may be advisable. Another way to raise awareness of dementia is to have leaflets in reception easily visible. Often if patients have concerns, they may be frightened of seeking advice or unsure where to start asking for help. If they feel unable to ask, a leaflet is a good non verbal way of offering information.
If we are seeing a patient with dementia or treating someone who has a relative or who is a carer of someone with dementia we always allocate longer time for the appointment. Without the pressure of time it can become a welcome appointment rather than a hassle and it can become a positive event all round. The carer can be relaxed knowing their relative is being well cared for by someone who understands their problems or the carer can attend for treatment with no fear that the wellbeing of their relative is not considered.
Signage is another important way to assist people attending the clinic, especially for the first time. If a patient was known to have dementia before attending we would always aim to be ready waiting for them to receive them at the door. The toilets are always immediately pointed out as this can be an anxiety for patients and carers. If forms present a problem to complete this can be done by the chiropractor rather than the patient or carer.
2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?
I see no obstacles in implementing the outcomes to raise dementia awareness and being Dementia Friendly.
In my experience the greatest problem in treating patients with dementia is being able to take an accurate history. Many times carers can give the details for the form but it is the patient themselves that are experiencing the pain so it can be tricky assessing the patient. Often I have seen patients who have literally forgotten where it hurts if the problem is intermittent. So clinical experience and examination findings are key to the additional information given by the carer. It is helpful to work with the carers to ask them specific questions if the patient is unable to answer.
Signage and clinic experience
We aim to improve the signage back to reception as the re are signs to point towards the toilet but nothing to help people back to reception. Despite it being almost impossible to get lost it could well help someone who felt unsure.
We need to display the Dementia Friendly certificate and leaflets to clearly show people they are in a supportive environment and that they can relax.
