Dulwich Picture Gallery

The Gallery, the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery, was established more than 200 years ago because its founders believed as many people as possible should see great paintings. Today we believe the same. We house a world-class collection of Old Master paintings in Sir John Soane’s unique building allowing visitors to experience exceptional art in an intimate, welcoming setting. We remain relevant by uniting our history with our present using innovative exhibitions, scholarship and pioneering education to change lives

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

By ensuring that front of house staff are trained as Dementia Friends.

By acting on the recommendations of the dementia audit.

By ensuring that our learning and engagement programmes are inclusive and support people living with dementia.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The site itself is a listed building and so this might prevent us from being able to action any major changes recommended by the audit.

To overcome this we would seek to make any and all reasonable adjustments to make the Gallery and our public spaces more accessible to people affected by dementia.

2. Actions

  • Dementia Friends Training

We are going to train as many staff as possible to be Dementia Friends. Particularly those with public-facing roles. Eg: Gallery Attendants, Shop and Restaurant Staff, Learning team members, artists, guides and volunteers.

  • Dementia Champions

Staff member(s) to train as Dementia Champions so we can continually train and update staff and provide sessions in our local community. Ensuring dementia awareness and training is embedded in the Gallery.

  • Dementia Audit

We are going to commission and undertake a dementia audit to find out how visitors with dementia experience the site so that we make act on any recommendations to better support visitors living with dementia.
