Ilkley and District U3A

Ilkley & District U3A is a branch of the University of the Third Age which is a national and international charitable and voluntary organisation for retired, semi-retired and unwaged people. Its purpose is to support life-long learning (academic, social, artistic, musical, physical and practical) through the establishment of interest groups where members voluntarily share interests and skills for the benefit of other members.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Ilkley & District U3A recognise that we can deliver better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers by:

Raising awareness of, and reducing the stigma of dementia amongst our members. Enabling people living with dementia the opportunity to participate in activities to enrich their lives as appropriate.  Expressing an expectation that our members will offer respect and understanding to people living with dementia. Establish a ‘feel safe’ culture within our groups so that people living with dementia will feel at ease and confident in groups in which they participate

We have already initiated the concept of a dementia friendly U3A through a talk to the general membership on 16th April 2016 by Dr. Elizabeth Milwain, Director of ‘The Memory Tree’. Notes were published on our website for those unable to attend.  A further  meeting was offered to Group Leaders by Alison Eagle and Sylvia Bergin  of Dementia Friendly Ilkley. Our actions initially will concentrate on the raising awareness of our members.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Lack of knowledge and understanding of dementia. To reach out to all 1300 members to gain their interest, understanding and support. Effective communication with non- email members. Apprehension from members about discussing dementia. Members with busy lives having time to attend meetings.
