Tanworth-In-Arden Medical Practice

We a a semi-rural doctors surgery with a large proportion of elderly patients, we are aware of Dementia and Alzheimers and as such are making moves to become ever more friendly. Our staff are very understanding and we have a good relationship with our patients. We have held a meeting recently showing films from Dementia organisations and I have attended a course earlier this year where I became a Dementia Friend. We are reviewing our surgery premises to see where there is any room for improvement.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We are a semi rural practice and have many elderly patients, we are striving to become more Dementia/Alzheimers friendly.

I in my role as head receptionist attended a course 18th February 2016 on Dementia Awareness - Dementia Friendly Communities held with Warwickshire County Council (living well with dementia Coventry & Warwickshire). I found this a very good course where we talked about all aspects and watched a number of films. I in turn held a meeting back at our Surgery as soon as we had the man hours to do it, which was attended by all the staff in Reception and Dispensary who directly deal with our patients, where I showed all the films that impacted on me at that meeting.

We have alerts on all our patients records so that they get an understanding and empathetic service. We are checking our premises to see what improvements can be made, although we have a very modern practice which is very friendly already. I have also done the Memory Walk and raised £280 we are actively now very aware of Dementia and Alzheimers as a practice.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Our biggest challenges are actually trying to fill in all the appropriate forms online to show what we are doing with Dementia Friendly website to gain the stickers to display on the door of the surgery. Also we are challenged with staff shortages so are only able to do things online and in house, but other than that we are very committed.
