1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

During the National Dementia Awareness week in May, Leeds Nuffield held our first Dementia Awareness training sessions for our staff to become “Dementia Friends”.

These sessions will be held throughout the year and form part of the mandatory training for all staff. This is to support the implementation of the national Dementia Strategy and the Prime minister’s “Challenge.

To improve the care environment for people that have Dementia and are attending our hospitals, we are refurbishing, initially one patient bedroom with Dementia Friendly soft furnishings, improved lighting and Dementia Friendly signage.

The room will have specialised Dementia products i.e. Special clocks,a small whiteboard to remind them what will be happening that day, DVD and CD player, menu and communication books and a “Twiddlemuff”! This will assist the patient with Dementia who may be having surgery, to achieve a sense of order to their day and feel connected and engaged with their care.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Leeds Nuffield is leading the way(in the Nuffield Group), in improving the experience a Patient with Dementia will have in our hospital. In Leeds many of our staff have already become Dementia Friends and one of our bedrooms has been refurbished to be a Dementia friendly environment.

Nationally we have set a up a Dementia Working Group so that all 31 Hospitals will all have a Dementia Friendly bedroom and a “basic toolkit” of items that could assist patients with Dementia.
