1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our organisation can help support people with dementia, along with their families and carers, by offering a safe, comfortable and familiar space for those who use our building and premises on a regular or infrequent basis. We do this in a practical way by i) ensuring there is clear signage in all areas and ii) there are no dangerous and unexpected obstacles that would be confusing or hazardous.
At all times there is access to a space for quiet if it is needed, providing a place of retreat should the more public and populated areas become overwhelming and disturbing for an individual, this space being large enough to accommodate the individual and those who accompany them.
There are a number of key individuals within our organisation who are aware of the needs and issues specifically relating dementia on a personal and more professional basis. These individuals are able to offer support at the point of need. They are also able to offer support and advice in regard of our continuing awareness as an organisation.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We are aware of the continuing challenge to be aware of the changing issues regarding the building and premises we manage and maintain, taking the responsibility that comes with managing our premises seriously. To this end we continue to address the issue of changing needs on a regular basis. We do this with an awareness of the changing requirements in i) practical terms (in regard of our building and premises) making changes and adaptations as are appropriate and practical, and ii) in regard of personnel, addressing the need for training amongst key people within the church as is required, necessary and appropriate.

2. Actions

  • Improve understanding of dementia

Encouraging leaders/key workers to attend awareness raising sessions on dementia to ensure our practise and premises are suitable and appropriate for people with dementia and their families/carers.
