North Hykeham Town Council

The first North Hykeham Parish Council meeting was held in 1894. With the growth of the town, North Hykeham successfully achieved Town Council status in 1973. In 2006 North Hykeham Town Council was immensely proud to be awarded Quality Council status and received re-accreditation in 2010. The Town Council Committee meetings are currently held at six-weekly intervals. There are 18 Councillors at present and the Town is divided into 5 wards In May of each year, a Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected and a Town Clerk, Deputy Clerk and Assistant Clerk serve the Council. There are five Committees of the Council plus additional sub-committees and working parties who report and make recommendations to the Full Council for approval. These five committees are Community & Services, Finance & Policy, Neighbourhood Planning, Open Spaces & Recreation and Planning & Development The first North Hykeham Parish Council meeting was held in 1894. 1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The current Mayor of North Hykeham Cllr Susannah Spencer, has a vision of North Hykeham Town becoming a Dementia Friendly Community and with the support of fellow Cllrs and the community we will be working towards this becoming a reality We are galvanising local businesses, individuals affected by dementia and social and health services to become involved in setting up a local DAA in North Hykeham and we officially launch this on the 14th September 2016 We will act as a "Dementia Hub" to bring people together and ensure that our residents get opportunity to have a voice and shape our vision for a Dementia Friendly Community, allowing people with dementia and their carers to continue to live their lives in the community, with meaning

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Reducing the stigma that sometimes can be associated with dementia and getting all the community on board

2. Actions

  • To encourage the growth of the North Hykeham DAA Group and act as a “Dementia Hub” in the community

     

    Through the current Mayor Cllr Susannah Spencer’s vision of North Hykeham becoming a Dementia Friendly Community, the creation of a local DAA for local businesses and services is pivotal in doing this.

    Through galvanising the local community, ensuring longevity of a Dementia Friendly Community. 

    Launch date for the North Hykeham DAA was the 14th September 2016

  • To facilitate Dementia Friends Sessions in the Town and encourage more Dementia Champions

    The current Mayor of North Hykeham, Cllr. Susannah Spencer, is a Dementia Champion for the Dementia Friends initiative and has and will continue to facilitate sessions in the town, but to encourage better coverage and numbers achieved, others will be encouraged to become a Dementia Champion.

  • Continuing to reach out to local residents who have dementia and their carers and encouraging involvement in shaping our community to become dementia friendly

    We are determined that our Dementia Friendly Community must be shaped by the residents of North Hykeham affected by Dementia and their carers.

    Through galvanising individuals and giving them a voice, the right solutions and services will be put into place.
