Burlington Nursing and Residential Home

We provide care that ranges from helping people with day to day activities through to full nursing care at Burlington.We also care for people with dementia at any age or stage of the illness. Carey Jamieson as the Owner has a background in both health and social care and is happy to offer advice to anyone grappling with the issues of care in older age, as well as fees, sources of funding and benefits. Maggie Willson is the Registered Manager, and the Responsible Individual also a Registered Nurse with many years’ experience working within a nursing home environment. Most of the rooms have en-suite facilities. We also have a specialised double room for couples , this is a 2 bedded room that adjoins and also has en-suite toilet and bathroom facilities, a lovely large spacious room. Our chef provides excellent, creative and well-planned menus based on regular feedback from our residents. These are all home cooked from scratch with the freshest ingredient's straight from the green grocer and local butchers. We will provide specialized menus to residents upon request and plan each individual residents nutritional needs. There are birthday cakes made and tea time celebrations for all our birthday youngsters. Families and Friends are welcome at any time of the day and encouraged to join in with the activities.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

At Burlington we try to ensure that all residents know that their personal choice's and preference's will be heard and acted upon. That their needs are of the utmost importance to us, so our staff are approachable and accommodating If I have a need for anything. We ensure that Burlington maintains a safe and welcoming environment. We like to think that the residents feel the Burlington is their home. There is an open door policy and their family are always welcome. We are also very proactive with our staff by trying to maintain a happy and productive work environment. Mapping out career paths for all our staff and ensuring that they attend regular additional training in order to support and understand our residents. The Management of Burlington attend advanced training and do all they can to familiarise themselves with the new and ongoing research in Dementia and Alzheimer’s which they pass on to the staff and the residents. Burlington have recently started a few new projects which will be focusing on working in the community and supporting local projects especially in the range of dementia.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

There are always challenges when you are trying to make changes and push old ideals. We find the most challenging aspect at the moment is standardising care yet keeping it personal and holistic. Making care holistic is the easy part as it is simply getting to know and understand our residents better. Which is fun and rewarding as well. But standardising care can be tricky in the sense that we need to make sure all our carers are working on the same high level of care. Yet ensuring that they understand how to deliver that care in a personal way.

2. Actions

  • Standardise care for all carers

    As we know training for care workers is not standard and varies greatly across the Health and social care industry especially as there is no entry level. Even the care certificate is not compulsory, it is an expectation. At Burlington we make sure all our carers have the basic standard of care which we ensure all our carers work by. Our care workers all posses either a NVQ 2 or a care certificate. Or are enrolled on the care certificate and are working with our in house mentor to attain it.

  • Create career paths for all employees.

    As we know the care certificate is not compulsory, it is an expectation. In fact, one of the critical differences between the care certificate and the common induction standards and something that is included in the legislation, is the principle of competence. It states that If you have completed the care certificate you are competent in care. At Burlington we feel competent is not enough. It is a simple starting block to be built upon. We feel it is important to understand what area's they want to study further in are. And to aid them in doing so. Not only will it benefit our staff in their future. It will benefit Burlington and her residents. So we are working on setting up a career path fro all staff and guiding them with the training they need in order to accomplish their goals.

  • Create a commfortable and safe enviroment fro our residents.

    Although we are confident our home is safe for our residents. We are embarking on a project to create a more personalised feel to their individual rooms. We are also trying to make the home easier to navigate for our residents with dementia. And as interactive and homely as possible.
