1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our work particularly addresses i-Statements (1), (3.) & (4.) of the Declaration. Locally: Our work for all clients and especially those in later life ensures that personal choices and decisions are met both before and after death; our work with Powers of Attorney ensures that clients have legal mechanisms in place to facilitate support enabling them to live life; and our technical expertise ensures that every client (and their family) is fully aware of all the options they have available regarding finances and succession planning. Nationally: Our work through Dementia organisations nationwide allows us to contribute to the ongoing and much-needed education process of the public in estate planning matters. A legal structure that underlies every client's support is a crucial part of their care and ensures that they have the knowledge and know-how to live the fullest life and leave their affairs secure for their family.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The challenge we face is changing public perception: The context or landscape of our work is not well-understood. Most individuals recognise the necessity of estate planning, but there still exists too much confusion and myth about what is and isn't possible. There is also an unfortunate lack of urgency with many leaving their estate planning 'too late' - fewer than 30% of the population have an up-to-date Will and less than 1% an up-to-date Power of Attorney. Cameron James are committed, through their support of charities, to improving awareness, simplifying processes and encouraging change for every client.

2. Actions

  • Improve awareness of estate planning provision for those affected by Dementia in the wider community, through Care Home networks

Cameron James Legal is preparing to deliver training to Care Home staff on estate planning matters. Whilst this has the beneficial short-term impacts of upskilling staff, improving provision for residents and assisting carers and families, it is also part of a much larger awareness campaign. Cameron James Legal is committed to dispelling some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding estate planning and legal provision for vulnerable adults. By providing pro bono training on estate planning services and products to families and carers, as well as those affected by Dementia, Cameron James hope to contribute to a better knowledge and understanding of estate planning within the community at large.
