Craftworks Community Arts

Our organisation works in libraries and community centres across the borough. We work with participants of all abilities to create pieces of art to be shared with the community.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our organisation's activities set out to achieve the following objectives for our participants:

'I live in an enabling and supportive environment where I feel valued and understood.'

'I have a sense of belonging and of being a valued part of family, community and civic life.'

Our activities are open to the entire community -  this ensures that participants with a diagnosis of dementia are included in a community activity and don't feel as though this is an event for 'people with dementia'

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The challenges for our organisation are about audience developement. Our marketing states that the sessions are 'Dementia Friendly', which can lead to some other members of the community feeling as though the sessions are not for them, and some people with an early stage dementia diagnosis not wanting to be stigmatised.

The challenge for us is to ensure that families and carers of people with a diagnosis of dementia bring their loved ones to the sessions, and that we ensure a balnce of people with and without a diagnosis in the sessions.
