1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We can continue to support people in the community to live life independently. We will also support and develop those who are caring for people on a daily basis.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The difficulties that we may face is with general public perception of those with dementia and how small changes in society can enhance the life of someone with Dementia.

2. Actions

  • CAREGiver Training

At Home Instead Senior Care our mission is to enhance the lives of our clients and their families. Our CAREGivers are recruited as a result of their caring passionate personality and interpersonal skills. These natural skills are followed up with Home Instead Training prior to any CAREGiver commencing work. It has been identified that a significant number of our clients have Dementia therefore we aim to have every CAREGiver trained to an advanced level by completing a training programme designed by national and international renowned dementia and Alzheimer’s experts. This will mean that our Caregivers’ are provided with the latest in Alzheimer’s and education and home care techniques.

  • Public/Family/Friends Education

Four members of team are already Dementia Champions we are starting a programme of awareness session to the local community hoping to create Dementia Friends. Following on from this Home Instead Senior Care have a family and friends education programme which is designed for those people living closely with a person with Dementia this gives people a better understanding of the condition and how to engage with a loved one on regular basis. The programme offers education but also a chance for people in small groups to share their personal experiences and thoughts.

  • Work with other businesses and local Universities

Engage with those businesses to make staff and working environment more Dementia  Friendly and to encourage people in the workplace to become dementia friends. We will continue to work with Newcastle University assisting with student nurses, research programmes and the dementia app.
