1. Action Plan
1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?
Sunrise Senior Living in Banstead have been instrumental in setting up the Banstead Dementia Action Alliance and therefore want to support the initiative wholly by becoming members. We are fully committed to raising awareness about dementia and help remove the stigma from the word. Supported by The Alzheimers Society, we are already recruiting volunteers from the local area to help to do this. We have been working locally over the past year with organisations such as Surrey Police, Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, Waitrose, Age Concern Banstead and local churches to set up the scheme.
As an organisation we are committed to providing support to those diagnosed with dementia and to their families. All of our staff, regardless of their role within the organisation, undertake a comprehensive training program, which includes dementia care, before they are allowed to work with the residents.
We call ourselves a "community" because we not only work within the home itself but we also support local events. For the past two years Sunrise of Banstead have been supporters of the Age Concern Banstead "Ageing Well Day". Our residents are regular attendees at the monthly "Singing for Joy" service at the local church. We host regular talks and events covering a whole range of subjects including dementia care. We are in full support of the Banstead DAA's ultimate initiative to make Banstead High Street "dementia friendly".
2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?
Manpower is required in order to promote this initiative to local offices, shops and retail premises.
