1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Sunrise Senior Living in Banstead have been instrumental in setting up the Banstead Dementia Action Alliance and therefore want to support the initiative wholly by becoming members.  We are fully committed to raising awareness about dementia and help remove the stigma from the word.  Supported by The Alzheimers Society, we are already recruiting volunteers from the local area to help to do this.  We have been working locally over the past year with organisations such as Surrey Police, Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, Waitrose, Age Concern Banstead and local churches to set up the scheme.

As an organisation we are committed to providing support to those diagnosed with dementia and to their families.  All of our staff, regardless of their role within the organisation, undertake a comprehensive training program, which includes dementia care, before they are allowed to work with the residents.

We call ourselves a "community" because we not only work within the home itself but we also support local events.  For the past two years Sunrise of Banstead have been supporters of the Age Concern Banstead "Ageing Well Day".  Our residents are regular attendees at the monthly "Singing for Joy" service at the local church.  We host regular talks and events covering a whole range of subjects including dementia care.  We are in full support of the Banstead DAA's ultimate initiative to make Banstead High Street "dementia friendly".

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Manpower is required in order to promote this initiative to local offices, shops and retail premises.

2. Actions

  • Make every Team Member who works at Sunrise in Banstead a Dementia Friend

By hosting regular Dementia Friends Information Sessions in house for Team Members to attend.

    2017 - Second Quarter Update

Regular Dementia Friends session are held at Senior Living Banstead for staff. Becoming a Dementia Friend is part of a new member of staff's induction.

  • Tell others about the work of the Banstead Dementia Action Alliance

When we are attending other appointments in the local area, we will be also promoting the Dementia Friends programme so that others become aware of it's existence.

    2017 - Second Quarter Update

Have actively recruited new members to the Banstead Dementia Action Alliance throughout April and June and more recruitment is planned for coming quarter.

    2016 - Fourth Quarter Update

Where people are attending Information Sessions, some of them as their own personal "action" have asked to become more involved with the Banstead DAA.  We will be working with them early in 2017 and they will help us to raising awareness by visiting shops and offices in the High Street on our behalf.

  • Supporting our residents who have dementia and their families in terms of how they cope with it.

Offer "dementia friendly" activities as part of our "Live With Purpose" programme for residents to stimulate their mind, body and soul.  Offer Relatives Support Group for families with a loved one who has a diagnosis of dementia.

    2016 - Fourth Quarter Update

Over the past year we have been working behind the scenes with Age Concern Banstead, Surrey Police, Surrey Fire & Rescue, the local churches etc.  A talk was given recently at the Age Concern Banstead volunteers evening raising the profile for this initiative.  With the help of our new volunteers we are going out into the High Street early in 2017 to talk about the Banstead DAA and get more people involved.
