1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

As a company we already have sponsored a number of dementia projects such as Alzheimer Café and wrote and produced the Knowing Me? Knowing You? Leaflet from my own personal experiences dealing with my mothers and then step mother’s illness.
As such as a company I ensure we deal with people of a confused state of mind in a respectful and understanding manner. This is so important when taking family photographs
as the memories that they sustain will be of great benefit to some and comfort to others.
We can offer understanding without the need for explanation, we can make light of difficult situations that can be very stressful for careers and try to lighten their burden for the short
time they are with us.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

For myself it is easy to quickly spot a potential issue that needs to be handled carefully, but other members of my team, unsurprisingly, will be slower to pick up on this.
At early onset stages the signs are far closer to personality exaggerations and appear more eccentric than a disability. Experience is the only key to helping with this and I feel this project helps to make people stop and think a bit more first before judging.

  • Helping staff to find the best way of dealing with customers who may be living with dementia

I ensure we deal with people of a confused state of mind in a respectful and understanding manner. We can offer understanding without the need for an explanation, we can make light of difficult situations that can be very stressful for carers and try to lighten their burden for the short time they are with us. For me it is easy to quickly spot a potential issue that needs to be handled carefully, but other members of my team, unsurprisingly, will be slower to pick up on this. I feel the best results will be gained by encouraging my staff to have a compassionate view to all customers and help them to find the best way to deal with people who come across differently.
