1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

A diagnosis of Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease could very well be accompanied by feelings of fear, anger and confusion as to the future for both the person with dementia and the carer or family members alike.  Our caring and experienced Probate Team are on hand to provide valuable advice and assistance in an understanding and sensitive manner.

We understand it is often necessary to make changes in how to approach situations and appreciate the importance of adapting to the perspective and needs of a person with the onset of dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease.  We feel it is important to understand these individual needs and respond accordingly with the use of eye contact, a smile or reassuring facial expression and tone of voice to help convey the information and show compassion.

There are a number of financial and legal issues to consider.  Some people choose to use a Lasting Power of Attorney or a Will to plan ahead and find this empowering and reassuring.  We can offer help and support through this process which may be otherwise challenging and confusing, and for further peace of mind we are able to offer our services as a professional attorney or deputy.

We pride ourselves at being committed to our client and delivering a no-nonsense service in a friendly and non-intimidating manner, be that at our offices or in the relaxed setting of their own homes.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We believe the challenges exist in the form of getting the message out there as early as is possible that help is available; help in the form of good, quality assistance from caring and experienced lawyers.

We deliver these services both consistently and fervently in a manner which is subject to constant review to ensure suitability, and exact any necessary changes in line with client needs and feedback; as is evidenced by forging a hopefully happy relationship with Dementia Action Alliance.

2. Actions

  • Dementia Awareness - Dementia Friends

Oxley & Coward Solicitors LLP will assist in supporting people with dementia and their families by providing advice and legal services to ensure that their legal arrangements are in order whilst acting with compassionate professionalism; having knowledge and understanding of the difficulties a family may be experiencing.

We will do this by providing Dementia Awareness Sessions firstly for the Wills, Trusts and Probate Team and Receptionists; with a longer term plan of cascading the awareness to all departments over time.

As employees are made more dementia aware they will also become Dementia Friends.

We will register Oxley & Coward LLP on the Dementia Friend’s website

  • Sign posting

We will do our best to make ourselves aware of the support services available and strive to keep updated on the same; in case there is opportunity to offer information to clients who may be distressed or who simply wish to talk.

  • Link to RDAA subgroup

We will develop links with the other professional who are members of RDAA, become members of the professional subgroup and further help to further raise the profile and membership of RDAA.

  • Professional representation

We will secure links with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and attend events requiring professional legal representation as required together with attending Memory Cafes or other service user events to provide legal advice as necessary.
