Harbour Community Bookshop

Harbour Community Bookshop provides Watchet and its visitors with its own second hand bookshop while, at the same time, raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis and for local charities. Staffed by volunteers and open during the town’s main tourist season, Harbour Community Bookshop lies in the heart of Watchet, right on the Marina and a main pedestrian link, and close to the heritage railway station and main shopping street.

Watchet & the Quantocks Dementia Action Alliance

1. Action Plan

Harbour Community Bookshop is well placed to welcome all visitors and residents including those living with dementia and other memory problems and their carers. Basic awareness training for all volunteers would increase the levels of inclusion for all Harbour Community Bookshop’s customers.

Because of its financial structure, Harbour Community Bookshop can support the work of Watchet Dementia Action Alliance periodically with small grants for specific projects which have included, in 2015, the purchase of display banners and materials for song books.

Individual Harbour Community Bookshop volunteers are, by definition, supporters of good causes and one acts as Secretary to the Watchet Dementia Action Alliance’s Steering Group.

2. Actions

  • Raise awareness of dementia among volunteers

Provide all volunteers with the basic booklet on Dementia Awareness and offer all volunteers the opportunity to become Dementia Friends either online, or through face to face presentations by local Dementia Friends Champions.

  • Financial and personnel support for dementia action

Continue to support Watchet Dementia Action Alliance with small grants for specific needs and with secretarial expertise and other appropriate skills as the opportunity arises

  • Promote dementia friendly approaches

Promote dementia friendly approaches to staff and customers through our internal and external publicity and communications
