Our mission statement is...Live Well for Less. However, we want our retailing to be about more than quality products and good service. Sainsbury’s Ramshill also wants to support its local community on Southcliff, Scarborough, being a good neighbour to everyone, especially those people who might need a little extra time and assistance in our store.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The Ramshill Sainsbury’s Local already has a great reputation for being customer-centred.  Our main priority is to make sure that all our customers’ needs are met through commited customer care and a decent choice of products.  We believe in going ‘the extra mile’ to help those with disabilities and frailties to benefit from (and hopefully enjoy) their shopping experience.  Those with dementia and their carers are people who merit protecting and looking after, so that they can retain independence in their shopping. 

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We would aim to have all our staff undergo a basic dementia awareness session, so that everyone offers a dementia-friendly service to our customers. Time constraints according to shift patterns/absence etc.  would need to be overcome.  The layout of the store and product stocking to be as helpful as possible to all our customers, including those with dementia.

2. Actions

  • To continue to provide Practical Help for those customers who need it

    Continue to ensure that there is additional help – and importantly time - readily available for those who shop in the store.  Colleagues to be alert to those who need assistance in the aisles and at the checkout (choice of goods, help with money, assistance with packing etc).

  • Promote Customer Awareness of Dementia

    Sainsbury’s Ramshill will aim to support Dementia Awareness by publicising local services and making information leaflets available for customers. 

  • Ongoing Review of the Layout and Stock of the Store

    Sainsbury’s Ramshill will continue to review the layout and stock of the Store, in order to make the shopping experience as easy and as helpful as possible for those with dementia and their carers
