Positive Ageing Council of Lewisham

The Positive Ageing Council was set up in 2011 to help give older people a voice, share views and ideas, meet new people and join in with free social activities. We predominantly work within Lewisham Council to influence, pressure and ensure that the LBL are considering the needs of older people when providing services and facilities POSAC is free and open to anyone aged 60 years or over, They meet as an open forum four times a year to discuss issues that have a real effect on the lives of older people. Most recently POSAC have recruited lay visitors for care homes and local befrienders and are currently working to influence Lewisham Mayor and Cabinet, to ensure new developments have to consider how ‘older person friendly’ they are, when submitting planning applications The group organise social events and activities. POSAC will talk about anything and everything that matters to them.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Training - We will ensure all 25 members of the Positive Ageing Council Steering group will be fully trained as dementia friends. We will also identify a minimum of 6 members of the steering group who will take on the role as Dementia Friends Champions. Ideally spread across the borough so they are able to deliver training in and around their local area covering 3 wards each. We will help to facilitate their training and monitor their process.

Dementia Friendly Meetings - We will commit to ensuring that all our public meetings are Dementia friendly including clear signage, people who are trained as dementia friends on hand to help, and work with Carers Lewisham to support carers of people with dementia to attend the open meetings.

Promotion - We will promote the Lewisham Dementia Action Alliance to all members (currently over 500) in the paper newsletter that has a print run of around 2000 and growing, we will use our influencing status within the Council to influence the Communications Team to better promote Dementia Awareness/ support available in Lewisham, in print and electronically, POSAC will influence older peoples voluntary, charitable and community organisations in Lewisham to register with the Lewisham DAA

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

1 ) Allaying the concerns of the older people we are hoping will become champions  - there may be personal fear about being able to deliver training themselves to other people

2) We need no issues with making our meetings dementia friendly

3) We can not always guarantee that the Lewisham Comms team cover what we want them too - as older people is not seen as a currently priority on their list. Therefore more in house local promotion will need to ensure that this action will work effectively

We will attend the training with the champions so there is a friendly face on hand
We will provide and offer practice training delivery sessions once the champions are fully trained

We will only send the champions to train groups that will be receptive to being trained by an older persons (yes… this should be everyone, but sadly it is not!)

Part of the work of POSAC this year is to get out and about and visit the smaller groups and lunch clubs in the borough, we will endeavour to influence these small groups to receive dementia friends training from then POSAC D.F. champions
