Newcastle High School for Girls

We believe it is important for our community to think beyond ourselves and look to how we can support and learn from others. Links with local schools, churches, businesses and other organisations as well as the GDST network and alumnae all play a critical role in the all-round education we provide. My role is focused on helping the School to further develop our links and create partnerships with local, national and international organisations. Our programmes offer a great opportunity for all girls to learn through service, expand their horizons, develop leadership and communication skills as well as make a valuable contribution to the local and wider community. 1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We are keen to contribute towards turning Jesmond into a Dementia Friendly Community through raising awareness of dementia within our school and carrying this over to other schools locally.

We plan to have around 5 students become Dementia Friends Champions who will then go on to deliver sessions to the students at the High School as well as to other surrounding schools. This will help towards reaching the Jesmond Dementia Action Alliances aim of raising awareness within the community.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Our barriers will include allowing time out of the curriculum to let the girls attend the full day Dementia Friends Champion training day.

2. Actions

  • Dementia Friend Champions

We plan to have a selected few 6th formers become Dementia Friends Champions to enable them to deliver sessions to the school children with the high school, and also to surrounding schools. This will help to spread awareness of the dementia in Jesmond.
