1. Action Plan
1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?
At Blenheim, Regal Care Homes are committed to supporting, embracing and empowering all our residents living with dementia as well as their relatives. This is done by ensuring all staff involved in the daily lives of these residents are trained to the highest standard.
We achieve this by having continuous training courses over and above mandatory to ensure staff are aware of all aspects of the individual needs of all our residents, these courses range from varying levels of NVQ, awareness sessions, Parkinson's,epilepsy, end of life etc.Staff eventually leading up to more advanced courses. We embrace the Dignity Challenge and are very involved with The My Home Life Charter
ensuring we achieve the gold standard by 2014.
We open our home to the community to involve them in the lives of our residents and our residents in their lives. We support families, friends and visitors from the community with information and offer one to one support. If we don't have the answers we will find them.
We involve all our residents in the day to day running of their home; we raise money with the residents to help others. We are recruiting volunteers to share and enhance life experiences
2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?
- Changing misconceptions about people living with dementia in the wider community as well as staff, families and friends.
- Encouraging families to take a more active part in the care of their relative with in the care home setting
- Being able to meet the varying needs of our residents through out the progression of their dementia.
- Ensuring every thing involved in the care of the individual is person centred.
- Continually ensuring staff have up to date training including all new staff, ensure all staff are continually motivated and inspired by a good management team.
- Having resources to continue activities that empower and enrich resident's lives within the care setting and community.
- Reviewing antipsychotic medication as soon as possible and as often required
