Healthwatch Warwickshire

Healthwatch Warwickshire is the independent consumer champion, created to gather and represent the views of the Warwickshire public on health and social care issues. Our Mission is to be the “consumer association” for those who use health and social care services in Warwickshire; to enable those who are seldom heard to have a real say and an effective voice in the decisions that affect them; and to be a critical friend to those who provide health and social care service in Warwickshire.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Healthwatch Warwickshire is the “consumer association” for those who use health and social care services in Warwickshire. In this capacity we perform a number of functions.

On a day to day basis we advise and signpost consumers, including those with dementia and their carers, so that they may make informed decisions about their health and social care and gain access to the services and support that they require.

We also run an Enter and View Service whereby we enter into care homes across the county, some of which specialise in dementia care, to capture the consumer experience. During these visits we look to ensure that residents are treated with dignity and respect, that they feel valued and understood and that they receive services that meet their individual needs. Where these fundamental conditions are not being met we make recommendations and inform relevant stakeholders.

Furthermore, it is also our mission to be a critical friend to those who provide health and social care service in Warwickshire, utilising the evidence we gather in our day to day interaction with health and social care consumers and representative bodies to support the delivery of better outcomes.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

As a small staff team covering the whole of Warwickshire we are looking to recruit additional individual and organisational champions to support us in our work. We will look to have at least one dementia organisation amongst this group.

In terms of our Enter and View service it is about ensuring that our volunteers have an understanding of dementia and what to look out for when conducting a visit. This is and will continue to be supported through the delivery of dementia awareness training.

2. Actions

  • Healthwatch Warwickshire will support enhanced awareness and understanding of dementia amongst staff, volunteers and Board members

Staff, volunteers and Board Members will be made aware of Healthwatch Warwickshire’s status as a Dementia Friendly organisation and will be offered training to support this, where not already received.

Additionally, information about dementia will be shared with volunteers through the volunteer newsletter on an ongoing basis and Healthwatch Warwickshire will signpost people to the Coventry and Warwickshire Living Well with Dementia Portal as and when appropriate to do so.
