Golding Homes is a not for profit Housing Association delivering high quality affordable homes and services for over 20,000 people in and around the Maidstone, Ashford and Tonbridge & Malling areas. Our priority is to provide a range of homes, including long and short term supported accommodation, for our residents that are safe and secure and ensure our neighbourhoods are places where people choose to live. We also offer a Golding Lifeline alarm service across tenure including home owners and to customers I private rented accommodation. Our passion is to provide an excellent service and aspire to be an organisation of choice for our residents and staff. We employ over 140 talented members of staff who are committed to ensuring we deliver our promises. As the largest landlord in Maidstone we recognise our social responsibility to invest in our communities and improve the life opportunities of all of our residents.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Golding Homes is committed to improving the lives of those living with dementia and their carers. In our long term supported sheltered accommodation we are scoping a project to make the Day Centre Community Hubs “dementia friendly” so that they are welcoming, usable spaces that are inclusive rather than exclusive.

Golding Homes plans to raise the awareness of the impact of dementia to frontline staff so that they can recognise the signs when working with customers. This will support those living with dementia to have positive experiences and feel part of the wider community.

Training will be made available to those who wish to participate.

The Golding Lifeline service is also being tailored to assist those living with dementia to remain safely in their home of choice and to be as independent as possible for as long as possible. This includes using new technology and developing links with local services such as the Dementia Alliance. Golding Homes will share good practice across the sector for example via the Kent erosh Group encouraging change in working practices and gaining a fuller understanding for the impact of dementia on residents and their families and carers. 

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

One of the main challenges is recognising the impact dementia can have on the daily life of an individual and their family. Importantly staff need to be aware and have the knowledge and skills of how to recognise the early signs of dementia to assist and support the person’s family to adjust and accept the changes for their relative. Supporting and sign posting the family to established support networks is vitally important especially in the early days of diagnosis. This is why staff training is crucial and engaging staff to become trained is the challenge so that the responsibility is owned by Golding Homes staff. Assistive technology is constantly changing but it is still taking a long time for real development to take place. Currently much of the technology available is prohibitively expensive or unsuitable for the user in some way.

2. Actions

  • Developing dementia friendly communities within Golding Homes Day Centre Community Hubs.

    This action is all about making small changes to make life easier for those living with dementia. This project will include installing brighter lighting, clear clocks with easy to read faces and glass fronted cupboards as well as other changes to both private and communal spaces.

  • Dementia Friends training for front line staff so they can recognise the signs of dementia and sign post customers and their families to support networks.

    Dementia friends training to be offered to all frontline staff to improve their understanding of dementia and the effect it can have. Staff will be able to recognise the signs of dementia and have a “tool box” of sign posting information to disseminate out to customers and their families to the available support networks.

  • Golding Lifeline Assistive Technology Package for customers with dementia to enable them to continue to lead independent lives in the home of their choice.

    To put together a package of assistive technology to keep individuals in their own homes for longer. This will include items such as a lifeline alarm , fall sensor, smoke detector and door sensor to be used as needed. Golding Homes hopes that as the technology develops the menu of service offered to our customers will increase.
