South West Trains

South West Trains operates around 1600 trains per day on the network in the South and South West England. We serve more that 200 stations and employ around 4,500 people. The South West Trains network encompasses Hampshire, Surrey, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Devon, Somerset and London serving a mixture of commuters and longer distance travellers.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We aim to give our staff the skills required to identify and best support our customers who may be experiencing dementia so that they can use the railway safely and effectively.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Due to a variety of other priorities and responsibilities it may be a challenge for us to release front line staff for training. However, I like the idea of training a champion who can go on to train other colleagues. I’d like to pilot what ever work we do in Basingstoke with a view to rolling out our support for people with dementia to other stations across the network.
