1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Chichester Library works in partnership with other local organisations to raise awareness of dementia and the support that is available locally by holding Dementia Awareness Days.
Within this proposal, staff and customers will receive Dementia Friends training and this will enable us to offer a better service to people with Dementia and their carers.
We have introduced a memory management ticket, which allows adults with memory difficulties, which affect their ability to return items on time to take out 20 items including audio books free of their hire charge. There are no fines for overdue items on this ticket.
We have added Picture Books to Share to our county stock. These are books for people with dementia as they can make communication easier, reduce boredom, depression and isolation, help deal with difficult behaviour, encourage reminiscence, provide and enjoyable activity and provide an enjoyable distraction.
The National Reading Well Books on Prescription for Dementia Scheme is available in all libraries within West Sussex.The core booklist of 25 titles includes professionally endorsed information and advice for people diagnosed with dementia, their carers, and people worried about symptoms or wanting to find out more about the condition.
West Sussex Library Service has created reminiscence packs which contain a collection of multi-sensory objects around a theme.
As part of the later life offer staff will be trained to help people with dementia and their carers too.
West Sussex Library Service has regular drop-ins that can provide a social meeting place available for all. These include regular readers groups, Knit and Natter sessions and Board Games sessions.
West Sussex Library Service coordinates a Housebound Volunteer Service. This is a facility that is available to those that are unable to get into the library due to age, illness or disability. The service is delivered by volunteers who arrange a visit and deliver a selection of books.
West Sussex Library Service have created an ‘Information for Older People’ Folder. This folder has been created to enable libraries to put information together for services for older people
As part of the later life offer staff will be trained to help people with dementia and their carers too.
Staff attend regular dementia forums, which allow us to promote our services, establish what other organisations are doing and form other partnerships.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Constraints on staff time and space in the libraries (especially the smaller branches), ensuring that these events are well attended. There are resolutions to these problems: Volunteers could be recruited and trained to help at events and promotion by posters, social media and on our website can help increase interest in the events.

2. Actions

  • We will offer our staff and the public dementia friends training sessions

    The library service has a commitment to provide excellent customer service and becoming Dementia Friends trained is part of this.    

  • To launch and promote our new reminiscence packs

    We currently have 10 packs and will be launching these on 22nd June. We hope to expand upon these and launch them countywide. These will be available to borrow by anyone in the community and will be promoted by staff.    

  • To increase the number of people using the Memory Management ticket.

    We will promote the memory management tickets and its benefits to the wider community.
