1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We are rolling out our own Home Instead Senior Care City & Guilds accredited Alzheimer's and other Dementias CARE ( Changing Ageing through Research and Education) programme to all our Caregivers. The training will also be offered to family members and other members of the community through workshops in the South Manchester and North Trafford area. Our training focuses on understanding the disease, getting to know the person behind the dementia and learning techniques to handle the many different behaviours associated with the disease. We hope to educate society and change opinions and views both on a local level and at a national level with the Home Instead network.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The biggest challenge we face is changing the way people think and view those living with dementia. We want to help people look at the whole person and to know the individual, their life and their past experiences. We want to treat the person living with dementia with respect and dignity at all times no matter what the behaviour.

2. Actions

  • Implement Accredited City & Guilds training for all our Caregivers

It is our aim to train all of our Careivers in the specialised City & Guilds accredited dementia training programme by the end of 2015. We will also then ensure that each new Caregiver completes this training programme.
