Community pharmacists were known in the past as chemists. Like GPs, community pharmacists are part of the NHS family. Every day about 1.6 million people visit a pharmacy in England. Community pharmacies are situated in high street locations, in neighbourhood centres, in supermarkets and in the heart of the most deprived communities. Many are open long hours when other health care professionals are unavailable. There are several different types and sizes of community pharmacies, ranging from the large chains with shops on every High Street or in edge of town supermarkets, to small individually owned pharmacies in small communities, in the suburbs and often in deprived areas or rural settings. The traditional role of the community pharmacist as the healthcare professional who dispenses prescriptions written by doctors has changed. In recent years community pharmacists have been developing clinical services in addition to the traditional dispensing role to allow better integration and team working with the rest of the NHS.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our pharmacy has a minimum of 2 dementia friends in our stores who can give support and information to patients and their families. All members of staff would wear dementia friend badges to raise awareness; we will continually work to give the store more dementia friends.

We have regular updates on information and kept up to date in what is happening with dementia in our communities. We have a Dementia pack which is kept in our staff room which is available for all staff members to read.

We have a consultation room where patients or families to talk in confidence to a member of staff without the need for an appointment.

By keeping training up to date our colleagues will have continued knowledge on how to give the best possible care and service.

The pharmacy is situated in St James Bexley Hospital and therefore accessible to a wide range of people.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

There are new members of staff that are unaware of dementia friends.

As a team we will train all new and current members of staff to a standard where they are competent to deliver the service.

We have a dementia training pack for staff to read and can use as a reference source.

All staff will be allocated enough time to learn at their own pace.

2. Actions

  • Premises

    • We will arrange our premises as recommended by DAA by having a clear seating area to allow patients to rest.
    • A full risk assessment will be conducted of the premises which will help to reduce accident risk, but also help people feel relaxed about their surroundings
    • The consultation room will be clearly signposted and available at all times when the pharmacy is open.
    • We will display leaflets and information relative to Dementia to allow patients to get information when needed.

    • A dementia friend pack will be available for all staff to read. This will encourage all staff to be aware of the service and allow them to train to become dementia champions.
    • Continual updates regarding dementia will be shared with the team as part of weekly briefings
    • All staff will have planned training time which they can use to train to become dementia friends/champions
