1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We offer support and friendship to patients in hospital: many of them older people, and an increasing number of them, people living with dementia. Through our ward visits and broadcasts, we aim to alleviate some of the anxiety and boredom experienced by being away from home, loved ones and familiar surroundings; to provide a welcome distraction from pain; to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation; and in so doing to aid in a patient ís recovery. Through our service, we can signpost people to other support which is available to them once they leave hospital.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

 We are continually striving to improve what we are able to offer patients through our service, despite our charity ís limited resources - people, time and money.

 Winchester Hospital Radio is an entirely volunteer-led organisation with no paid staff, so many of our team have paid full-time jobs elsewhere, making getting everyone together in one place at the same time to deliver training more challenging.

 Significant time is needed for many of our volunteer roles ñ not least researching, crafting and producing relevant information bulletins for our broadcasts and booklets.
