1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Olympus Keymed are providing funding for Support Workers and Information literature at local charities within Southend on Sea. We are taking part in the Dementia Friends initiative with Southend on Sea Borough Council and support the Southend Dementia Action Alliance to enable Southend to become a Dementia Friendly Community.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Creating and maintaining the enthusiasm for Dementia Friends and the Southend Dementia Action Alliance amongst staff via promotion of the initiative on the company notice boards and presentations.

Creating a Dementia Champion within the organization to continue the work of Dementia Friends.

2. Actions

  • Creating Dementia Friends

Olympus Keymed have created 13 dementia friends within our organization in Southend. We now have a greater understanding of the impact a diagnosis of dementia can have on the person and their families and friends. Through creating dementia friends, we feel that we have a better understanding of the concept of living well with dementia and will provide  support to employees, should they find themselves in this situation. We also have a greater understanding of the often conflicting demands of caring for a person living with dementia and the strain and stress this can potentially place on our employees  if  they are in a caring role. We will continue to offer dementia friends awareness sessions as needed by staff.
