1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Marnel lodge is a 62 bedded private dementia and elderly/frail nursing home based in Popley, Basingstoke. We are a part of the Barchester Healthcare group. Whilst caring for our residents with different forms of dementia and with other complex nursing needs, Marnel Lodge actively supports family members, carers and various dementia charities throughout the year.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

2. Actions

  • Dementia talks and information sessions

Marnel Lodge regularly holds talks and information seminars from healthcare professionals and dementia experts to support our resident’s families and other carers in the community. Marnel’s facilities have been utilised by charities, notably carer’s support groups as a free venue to meet on a regular basis. It has also been utilised by Carer’s Together support groups, free legal clinics, events for the Princess Royal Trust for Carer’s in Hampshire and the Hampshire Wellbeing service. Befriender’s from the HWS visit residents with dementia on a regular basis.

  • Involvement of residents with dementia in community events

Marnel Lodge has a full time activities team for their residents. As well as the various activities undertaken internally in the home, Marnel Lodge residents are often taken out on trips to join in with local community events as well as the other events in St Thomas’ and Cherry Blossom Manor too. The minibus trips encourage greater community engagement with our residents with dementia, supported by the activities and care staff who accompany them.
