Volunteer Centre West Berkshire

Our charity runs volunteer led community transport services, including the Newbury Handybus and Newbury community Care Scheme and Newbury Shopmobility. We also act as a volunteer brokerage organisation and run other projects such as Restorative Justice, Village Agents and Corporate Team Challenges

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We provide goods and services to people with dementia that support them in their daily living and enable them to stay at home and in their community enjoying the best quality of life for longer

We enable people living with dementia to be part of the community and continue to do daily and social activities

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Lack of knowledege and understanding amongst our staff

2. Actions

  • Providing Services for the Community

    We provide Handybus and Community Car transport to enable clients to get to Alzheimer's Society groups and activities

  • Awareness Raising and DAA Support

    We are actively advertising via the VCWB database for volunteers for the Newbury DAA and also for the Alzheimer's Society befriending service

  • Dementia Awareness

    We will hold one or two dementia friends awareness sessions for our staff and office volunteers and also for the volunteer drivers. This would total in excess of 50 people although not all may choose to attend
