ANBRIDGE HOUSE CARE HOME

ANBRIDGE HOUSE IS A CARE HOME FOR OLDER PEOPLE OF WHOM MANY IN OUR HOME SUFFER FROM HAVING A DEMENTIA. WE ARE BASED IN THE NORTH WEST IN A TOWN THAT HISTORICALLY GREW WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COTTON MILLS. OUR HOME REFLECTS THAT HISTORY. WE ARE A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY HOME WITH AN ENVIRONMENT DESIGNED TO BE INTERESTING YET PEACEFUL, INTERACTIVE BUT ALSO SAFE, INDIVIDUAL BUT ACKNOWLEDGING THAT WE ARE COMMUNAL. WE ARE A FAMILY FRIENDLY HOME – OUR APPROACH IS RELATIONSHIP BASED CARE WHERE WE ACTIVELY ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO BE AN ACTIVE PART OF THE HOME AND OF THEIR LOVED ONE’S CARE.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

OUR LOCAL ACTION PLAN IS TO MAKE KNOWN TO PEOPLE IN OUR LOCAL AREA WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO, WHAT SERVICES WE OFFER IN RELATION TO DEMENTIA CARE AS A CARE HOME.

WE WILL DEVELOP A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY FACE TO OUR BUILDING AND WORK WHERE LOCAL PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED/INVITED TO COME IN AND ASK QUESTIONS AND FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT IS DEMENTIA CARE AND HOW WE CAN SUPPORT FAMILIES WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THE IMPACT OF DEMENTIA ON THEIR LIVES.

OUR AIM IS TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR LOCAL PEOPLE JUST TO DROP IN AND FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT IS DEMENTIA AND HOW THEY CAN HELP OTHERS WHO THEY KNOW ARE INFLICTED BY THIS DISEASE.

NATIONALLY, WE ARE PART OF OUR LOCAL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION WHERE WE MEET, TRAIN AND DISCUSS HOW WE CAN DEVELOP OUR OWN KNOWLEDGE OF DEMENTIA, HOW THIS KNOWLEDGE CAN BE USED TO HELP OTHERS AND HOW WE CAN IMPROVE OUR SERVICES AND ADAPT TO THE CHANGING NEEDS OF WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR A SPECIALIST ORGANISATION TO LEAD THE WAY IN LOCAL DEMENTIA CARE.

WE HAVE BEGUN THIS BY SIGNING UP TO THE DEMENTIA FRIENDS WEBSITE, TO THE SOCIAL CARE COMMITMENT PLEDGE AND WORKING WITH AGE/UK, LOCALLY.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

THE CHALLENGES IS TO WORK WITH THE BARRIERS THAT CREATE THE FEELINGS OF STIGMA IN THE FIRST PLACE, OF HOW WE CAN MAKE CONTACT WITH OUR LOCAL PEOPLE AND THEN OF HOW WE CAN CREATE AN EFFECTIVE SERVICE THAT PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO AND HAS MEANING FOR.

-  ACCESS, LOCAL ATTITUDES AND HOW RECEPTIVE WE ARE ALL PLAY PARTS IN THE BARRIER PROCESS.

OUR UNDERSTANDING OF DEMENTIA IS BOTH CLINICAL AND PERSONAL – THE PERMANENT DEATH OF BRIAN TISSUE LEADING TO THE DEGENERATION OF THE PERSONS ABILITIES TO LEAD THE LIFE THEY HAD PLANNED FOR THEMSELVES.

2. Actions

  • MAKE KNOWN PUBLICALLY WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO:

  • Community Action and Support

We have sponsored the training for a Dementia Champion who is employed locally in the market place cafe. Her role is to engage and discuss with local people about their experiences and feelings they may have or are experiencing in relation to someone they know who has or may have a dementia illness. She is also employed here in the care home as a carer.
