We are a registered social landlord proving homes for people in the Yorkshire area. We are a registered social landlord. A sections of our housing is Independent Living accommodation for older people, we also have 2 extra care schemes.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We provide secure monitored accomodation. We have on most of our Independent Living schemes, staff on site during office hours. Call centre is in operation 24 hours a day when staff are not on site. Our extra care schemes are staffed 24 hours. We build communities and incolce our customers in decisions about our homes , communities and corporate plan.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Diminshing public funding, reductions in staff and resources. Public awareness and limited places in our extra-care schemes.

2. Actions

  • Improve our understanding of dementia

    Increase training and awareness of our staff in all areas of the business. Provide support to our residents and their families. Provide access to other services who can also support them.

  • Improving the knowledge of Mental Health Services

    Working with local training providers of extended training in mental health. Highlighting the gaps of knowledge amongst teams of staff and developeing an action plan to deliver training.

    2014 - Second Quarter Update

    Staff registered as Dementia Friends are now working with Learning and Development team to develop awareness workshops for all the business. Care and Support staff are now undertaking Tyro Dementia awareness training in Kirklees,Barnsley and Sheffield areas.

    Kirklees dementia friends within YH are delivering an awareness session to Home works electricians within their annual conference raising awareness within organisation.

    2016 - First Quarter Update

    Independent Living Officer within Park Court, Thurnscoe has signed up with RDAA and pledged to raise awareness and become a dementia friend.

    Attended DAA christmas gathering, made new contacts within community and passed our details out within community to raise awareness and further support our client base.

    Regular news features to wider business through intranet, newsletters and internal magazine to raise awareness of movement within organisation.

  • Learning and Development training programme

    Working with L&D team to look at mental health training and awareness, Dementia Champions are helping with this process to include dementia awareness to the wider group.

    Frontline staff now trained in Tyro Dementia Awareness level 2

    Mental health training provided to Kirklees team by Guardian Angels Ttraining organisation.

    Evaluation of the Dementia Workshops is due to take place and reviewed within our management team to plan how we can further improve our training / awareness / support our communities to become Dementia friendly.
