1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The advice, information and options that we give can enable to plan and make decisions about their welfare now and in the future. 

We can assist with applications for benefits for both people with dementia and their carers.

We have an Active Living Project that is for people age 50 and over who feel socially excluded or isolated, which is for instance,  inviting them to volunteer or participate in community activities.

 

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We are an incredibly busy service, and there are some time pressures in some of the information and assessment roles that could lead to someone with dementia being treated without any consideration of the affect of dementia on their ability to explain their enquiry fully and quickly.  We do not understand enough about dementia.

2. Actions

  • Ensure staff and volunteers undertake the dementia awareness training.

    We will arrange for a presentation session to be given by a dementia friends champion and information officer at a joint staff meeting, and ensure an awareness is included in service inductions, to improve their understanding of dementia and of effective ways of supporting people with dementia.

  • Supporting carers of people with dementia to continue volunteering, and reviewing the roles available to people with dementia .

    Once aware of the caring responsibilities of a volunteer, we will work with them to enable them to continue their involvement with the service as they wish , which could mean reducing their weekly commitment or taking a break.

    We monitor the work of all of the volunteers who advise clients.   Any alteration in their performance would be identified.  If they inform the service about a dementia diagnosis,  we will decide with them, and in the best interests of the clients, how they can continue to volunteer  with the service.

  • Look at practical ways of ensuring our premises are accessible.

    We will carry out an accessibility audit of our premises and review whether the information we provide about our services is dementia friendly.
