1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Home Instead Senior Care exists to help support older people to live independently and safely at home. Even an hour or two a week of quality-focused, tailored, person-centred care can help achieve this. Companionship support based on client / carer matching and consistency of support from one of more caregivers is also at the heart of everything we do. This puts us in a strong position to deliver better outcomes for people living with dementia. We will continue to strive to provide the best quality care possible through person centred care plans and continuing to develop our internal dementia training programme and to share this with our caregivers, client’s families and members of the local community. Our care and support services must offer clients and families an affordable option for care at home whether individuals are self-funding or in receipt of local authority or NHS funding.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The biggest challenge we face is changing the way people think and view those with dementia. To make them look at the whole person and to know the person, their life and their past experiences. To treat the person who has dementia with respect and dignity at all times no matter what the behaviour. Diagnosis rates are still very low (estimated to be only 43%). This affects the care provision that individuals are eligible for and can put added pressures onto individuals and family members. Awareness and understanding of what effective and affordable specialised dementia care at home looks like is also low and we are constantly challenged by the notion that people living with dementia should automatically be encouraged to cease living at home and consider residential care home options. Awareness and understanding of dementia and the people affected are also low amongst the general public and within businesses and retailers in the local area. Local residents also do not always know how/where to access best advice/training on dementia related issues.

2. Actions

  • Dementia awareness and training for staff

    Initial caregiver training will provide staff with appropriate information and knowledge to support a person with dementia.

    By having Dementia champions in our organisation we can ensure that all staff receive training to be recognised as a Dementia Friend.

    We will also offer support and encourage all staff to complete the NCFE level 2 Dementia Awareness qualification to further develop knowledge and support skills.

    After a probationary period staff will receive further intensive training to a City and Guilds accredited programme designed to further their develop skills and knowledge in supporting people with dementia.

    We aim to provide the most comprehensive dementia support training programme to our staff of any local provider.

  • Offer training in the local community

    We are planning the delivery of free workshops in the community to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The workshops will be a shorter version of our City and Guilds accredited CARE programme. The workshops will be available to the whole community including local businesses, council, volunteers, charity workers and those who are caring for a family member or friend with dementia. This will ensure that the wider community are better equipped to support and keep safe people with dementia. We will also seek to partner with other DAA members to achieve better access to information and training around dementia related issues.

  • Develop information resources for signposting

    Develop a through understanding of local support groups and organizations who might provide resources to persons with dementia, their carer’s, friends and family and develop links with key contacts.

    Be proactive in signposting clients, families, friends, carer’s and any other contact of the business to those resources as appropriate.

    Work closely and build relationships/links with other members of the DAA to make it easier for people to get access to the services they need.

  • Appoint Dementia Ambassador

    The Managing Director of Home Instead Westminster and City of London will undertake a role as Dementia Ambassador.

    This role will comprise networking with local businesses and organisations to promote interest in the needs of people with dementia and in the work undertaken by others to promote awareness.

    This will include, but not be limited to, encouraging organisations and businesses to train their staff, to provide facilities that are dementia friendly and encourage organisations and businesses to join the Dementia Action Alliance.
