 1. The National Dementia Declaration lists a number of outcomes that we are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The Tavistock Dementia Action Alliance is at an embryonic stage.  Local professionals from a variety of backgrounds, including those who have been affected by dementia, have formed a working group and identified 4 strategic aims to facilitate and enable the Tavistock Town Community to become a dementia-friendly community. In delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers the Tavistock Dementia Action Alliance aims to:

Establish a network of local businesses, service providers, civic organisations and charities who will be committed to an agreed action plan to help improve the lives of people living with dementiaIncrease the awareness and understanding of the issues facing those with dementia and their carers in the local Tavistock community through the provision of informationProvide training and presentations to local businesses and groups to enable better outcomes for local people with dementia and their carersIdentify funding and other resources within the Tavistock community.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

In the current economic climate resourcing any initiative so that it is sustainable will be difficult. Equally, engaging with young teenagers and volunteers as part of the national citizen service is seen as key to keeping the energy and enthusiasm for the initiative viable over the longer term. Furthermore, the Tavistock Dementia Action Alliance recognises it must be realistic in its aims particularly in setting achievable timescales for creating a culture of understanding of the issues surrounding dementia in the local community.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

To create something which is not just a concept or project but a sustainable and valuable community resource.
